Venice is a very strategic spot, controlling the entry for the rest of the peninsula, so naturally Italy would want to secure it. Without any communication there is no real choice but to assume the worst, or that's seems to be the gunboat tendancy anyway. Austria and italy can (apparently) get into conflict pretty quick. Turkey and england's positions are enhanced, italy and to perhaps a lesser extent russia and france seems to be more vulnerable. Of course that's just one specific strategic situation that can arise in any game, but I have a feeling this scenario will play itself out more than it would in non-age of empires gunboat games. Italy can only defend, no way to get other centers and defend yourself at the same time without that 3rd unit. Especially when other countries can't really be asked for support. Austria starts in vienna and wants trieste, suddenly there is all this pressure about tyrolia, and will Austria support himself in, in which case italy is basically screwed. I'm playing a gunboat age of empires right now, not doing so well as italy.
